Sport facility 2011
Mirandola (MO), Italy // 1590 sqm covered area

Collaborator: Mirco Bianchini

The strategic position of the skating track, with different entries on the bypass, and not very far from the town center, the library and bus station makes it a possible attraction, very important for the whole project and at the same time also for the town of Mirandola. The area characteristics are valued and increased through a strong architectural action that makes clear the crucial role of the structure in the town life.

The shape
The building has different surfaces with arches that according to the functional needs, characterize the spaces through the height relationships. The crucial elements of the final configuration are three.

The urban landscape: the skating track is delimited by a wall 3 meters high, that’s to say isolated and hidden. In order to be seen outside the perimeter, as important sign in the urban landscape, the covering is vertical. The phone antenna tower: an important vertical sign that is out of the context, in the internal space type: the different functional characteristics of the spaces near the skating track have influenced the height configuration through compressions and enlargements that determine close spaces to socialize and pass-by spaces. A unique and continuous mass with enlargements and compressions, with “green bags” that make real cones of natural light in the inner parts of the covering.

Coating and materials
The surfaces with arches are tent-structures in synthetic fibers that are held by arches made of thin wood sheets.
The body of the structure gain a shape through the combination of two surfaces that create a real internal and external skin.
The external part is made of a poor material, easy to find locally, like panels made of wicker branches.
They have very good performances regarding the sun screening, protection from bad weather and of course air circulation.
On the other hand the internal surface is made of a polymeric textile that is deeply in contrast with the external, making the space very technical and bright.

The advantages of the textile are various, it allows very easily to make surfaces with a double arch, to be resistant to bad weather, to be insulating and at the same time it allows the natural light to penetrate homogeneously.
The internal space has also some cuts in the textile, that bends in the inside, giving the possibility to create little gardens. This has the purpose to enlarge the perception of the outside in different points inside the structure, and also to generate very bright walking paths.

Energy performances
If we consider the building as an integrated system, we adopt some assembling strategies, as the creation of a double surface in the shape and in the use of the materials, that has the purpose of: screening the direct sun light in order to avoid the warming of the covered space in the summer period; creating a natural ventilation; insulating during the winter time; creating a screen in order to lower the acoustic impact of the bad weather; creating a bright space.

Functional program
The covering of the skating track organizes different functions of the structure, that allows to connect the area with the urban context: for example the bistro near the south entrance, will be used also by the people that do not attend the structure.
The building will be able also to host different activities, giving the possibility to people to have a multi-purpose space for: little concerts, events during the Franciacorta fair; fairs without using temporary structures, summer theatre, local acting events.

Functional spaces
Warehouse: the minimum unit will be of 15 sqm.
Locker room: the base unit will have 2 locker rooms of minimum 30 sqm each that are connected with a door that can be locked with a key. In each locker room there will be toilets and showers.
Cafè/Bistrò: the unit has locker for the operators and a kitchen, the tables will be positioned in the intermediate spaces.

Connection of the two project areas
The connection between the two areas wants to be a continuous path with swellings and contractions with the purpose to generate resting areas, sharing places where people can look at the athletes in the fields.
The idea of a continuous connection that folds into itself has the purpose to become a little path for the athletes’ training, but also as a more complex system it considers the possible connection the woods on the East side and to the by-pass to the West side.
The “park” uses the soil , maximum meters high, in order to create resting areas and little battlements.
Beside considering it mainly for sporting activities, the area has been also designed with energy purposes: the insertion of photovoltaic structures, “solar trees”, is a way to make people aware and to demonstrate that these technologies can be integrated inside a urban system without being disfiguring.
